My research has ranged from computer communication, artificial intelligence, technology for education, and networking the paper world.
I earned my master’s and doctoral degrees at IIT, Bombay, and have worked as a post-doctoral research associate at CMU. I started my career with TIFR, Mumbai, and then went on to be the first director of the National Center for Software Technology. NCST helped me play a significant role in creating India's academic network, ERNET, which brought the Internet to India in 1987. Later, in 2001, I played a key role in setting up the HP Labs India, as its first director.
I have served as President of the International Council for Computer Communication, and of the Computer Society of India (CSI). I have also served on the Expert Panel advising the ICT Task Force of the UN. I am a Fellow of the CSI and a Fellow of the National Academy of Engineering.
